History of the practice

The founder of the Practice was Dr. Tim Lovell, who was joined in partnership by Dr. Alan Hamilton and Dr. Geoffrey Porter. The Practice was originally located in a small house nearby (now part of the Tesco site), but was moved to it’s current location in the 1960’s and was extensively redeveloped in the early 1990’s to provide purpose–built accommodation to suit a Group Practice for modern service provision.

The Partnership now consists of seven Doctors and serves a population of about 11,600 patients residing in Andover and its surrounding villages.

As housing development progressed within the town, the Practice was no longer allowed to provide pharmaceutical services to all patients, as it had done in previous years. In order to maintain service provision, a small pharmacy was set up next to the surgery by Mrs. Ellen Hughes, who had been the previous dispenser within the Practice.

Upon her retirement, the doctors were able to take over the pharmacy business in order to continue the excellent local service that patients had been able to depend on. Since 2001 Shepherds Spring Pharmacy has been run by the Pharmacist Amarjit Singh. Originally operating from a converted caretaker’s flat, the premises were substantially upgraded and modernised in 2005.

As the town expands, it is likely that further facilities and consulting space may be required within the surgery, and provision has been made to allow further expansion to allow the surgery to be directly connected to the pharmacy at a later date.
